Senna is the fruit (pod) or leaf of the plant Senna alexandrina. It is approved in the US as a laxative for short-term treatment of constipation. Senna contains many chemicals called sennosides. Sennosides irritate the lining of the bowel, which causes a laxative effect.

Auri leaves and pods are very useful in curing constipation. The leaves and pods contain ‘sennoside’ compounds. They are used to treat constipation and diarrhea. Auri is the only natural laxative used worldwide.

Aurich plants grow to a height of about 75 cm. The leaves are similar to the leaves of avaram plants. The flowers are pale yellow and the pods are four to six cm long and 1.5 cm wide, turning black when mature. Each pod contains five to seven seeds. Fruits appear after self-pollination.

There are two types of Auri one is Tirunelveli senna (Vassia angustifolia) grown in our country and the other is Cassia acutifolia or Alexandrian senna. It is grown mostly in Sudan. Tirunelveli senna contains 1.2 to 2.5 percent sennoside compounds. But the Alexandrian type also has twice as many raw materials. But twice as much raw materials (from 2.5 percent to 4.5 percent sennoside) are found in Alexander’s variety. At present, the export value of this type of Auri is high, but the amount of production is low. Till now no varieties have been developed in Tirunelveli Senna.
